The new 3.9 mile (6.3 km) extension to Droylsden in Tameside will run from Manchester Piccadilly through the heart of east Manchester. The line runs under Great Ancoats Street, through Holt Town and along Ashton New Road.

The line will provide a link to the City of Manchester Stadium and the Velodrome and will have eight new stops at New Islington, Holt Town, Sportcity-Stadium, Sportcity-Velodrome, Clayton, Edge Lane, Cemetery Road and Droylsden.

In May 2009, a special fund of £1.5 billion was agreed for 15 transport schemes in Greater Manchester. These include a further extension to the East Manchester line from Droylsden to Ashton-under-Lyne with additional stops at Audenshaw, Ashton Moss, Ashton West and Ashton-under-Lyne. Plans for the extension from Droylsden to Ashton-under-Lyne were fully approved by the Department for Transport in March 2010.

Construction timeline (Piccadilly to Droylsden)

MPact-Thales was appointed in June 2008 as the main contractor for the Metrolink extensions to Oldham and Rochdale, Chorlton in South Manchester, Droylsden in East Manchester and MediaCityUK in Salford. Advance work, surveys and investigations on the East Manchester line began later in the summer.

The initial work involved clearing sites along the route of the new line and diverting utility pipes and cables (water, wastewater, gas, electricity and telecoms) away from the new line. Utility diversions started in autumn 2008 and will continue in 2010.

During 2009 we started work on some of the bridges and other structures along the route. We also widened Manchester Road over the Ashton Canal near Droylsden and installed a new footbridge for pedestrians. By the end of 2009 the first sections of track had been laid and we started work on some of the new stops. Construction work will continue during 2010 and 2011 as the new line and new stops start to take shape. As large sections of this route will run on streets, there will be some traffic management measures in place during the construction work including some temporary road closures.

One of the larger civil engineering projects on this line is the construction of the underpass that will take the tram under Great Ancoats Street out to East Manchester. Work to build the retaining walls on either side of the street started in 2009. This work will continue during 2010. We will keep Great Ancoats Street open to two way traffic wherever possible but we will need to put in place some traffic management measures at times.

Following testing and commissioning and driver training, the line will open to passenger services in spring 2012.

All construction work will be completed in accordance with GMPTE’s Code of Construction Practice (CoCP). This includes measures to ensure that safety procedures are followed and to minimise disruption to local residents and businesses.

Throughout the construction of the new Metrolink line, please be aware that construction sites can be dangerous places – sites are fenced in for the protection of the public. For your own safety, please do not try to access the worksites along the route of the new line.
