This 3.9 mile (6.3km) extension to Droylsden will provide links to Manchester Piccadilly, the City of Manchester Stadium and the Velodrome. It will run from the existing Manchester Piccadilly stop through East Manchester to Tameside.

Eight new stops will be built at Pollard Street, Holt Town, Sport City serving the City of Manchester Stadium,
New East Manchester serving the Velodrome, Clayton, Edge Lane, Cemetery Rd and Droylsden.

Construction work on the East Manchester line to Droylsden is due to start in early 2009 with the line opening in spring 2012.
