The quarter of a mile (0.4 km) extension, which will leave the Eccles Metrolink line near the Broadway stop, will provide an essential commuter link to MediaCityUK - one of the most exciting developments in the country.
The extension is jointly funded by the Northwest Regional Development Agency and Salford City Council.
Construction work on the MediaCityUK spur starts in spring 2009 with the line opening in summer 2010.
