This 14 mile (22.5 km) extension to Oldham and Rochdale will join the Bury Metrolink line just outside the city centre and run along the abandoned railway corridor to Central Park in east Manchester. Here it will join the existing Oldham loop rail line between Manchester, Oldham and Rochdale, which is being converted to Metrolink. The Oldham loop rail line closed after the last train on Saturday 3rd October 2009.

Find out more about the alternative travel arrangements whilst the railway line is converted to Metrolink.

We will upgrade existing stations or build new Metrolink stops at Monsall, Central Park, Newton Heath & Moston, Failsworth, Hollinwood, South Chadderton, Freehold, Oldham Mumps, Derker, Shaw & Crompton, Newhey, Milnrow, Newbold and Rochdale Railway Station (on Maclure Road).

In May 2009, a special fund of £1.5 billion was agreed for 15 transport schemes in Greater Manchester. These include further extensions to the Oldham and Rochdale line in Oldham and Rochdale town centres. New stops will be built in Oldham at Westwood, Oldham King Street and Oldham Central (Union Street). There will be additional stops in Rochdale at Drake Street and a new transport interchange in Rochdale town centre.

Construction timeline

MPact-Thales was appointed in June 2008 as the main contractor for the Metrolink extensions to Oldham and Rochdale, Chorlton in South Manchester, Droylsden in East Manchester and MediaCityUK in Salford. Advance work, surveys and investigations along the disused railway section of the line began later in the summer with the main construction work starting in 2009.

Work began to convert the Oldham Loop heavy rail line when it closed for passenger services after the last train on the 3rd October 2009. Converting the line to Metrolink operations will involve replacing nearly all the track along the line, demolishing the old railway stations to build new Metrolink stops and upgrading or replacing infrastructure along the route. We will also be constructing a new viaduct to take the tram over the existing Calder Valley heavy rail line where it will then run along High Level Road to a stop just outside Rochdale Railway Station.

We need to carry out a significant amount of maintenance and refurbishment work to nearly 100 bridges and structures along the route, varying from minor cosmetic work to more extensive refurbishment work. This will involve some temporary traffic management measures and some temporary road closures.

All construction work will be completed in accordance with GMPTE’s Code of Construction Practice (CoCP). This includes measures to ensure that safety procedures are followed and to minimise disruption to local residents and businesses.

Throughout the construction of the new Metrolink line, please be aware that construction sites can be dangerous places – sites are fenced in for the protection of the public. For your own safety, please do not try to access the worksites along the route of the new line.
