The 1.7 mile (2.7 km) extension to St Werburgh's Road in Chorlton will run south from Trafford Bar along the disused railway line with three new stops at Firswood, Chorlton and St Werburgh's Road. We are also building a new depot at Trafford Bar, where some of our new trams will be stored.
In May 2009, a special fund of £1.5 billion was agreed for 15 transport schemes in Greater Manchester. These include a further extension to the South Manchester line from St Werburgh’s Road to East Didsbury with additional stops at Withington, Burton Road, West Didsbury, Didsbury Village and East Didsbury. Plans for the extension from St Werburgh’s Road to Didsbury were fully approved by the Department for Transport in March 2010.

MPact-Thales was appointed in June 2008 as the main contractor for the Metrolink extensions to Oldham and Rochdale, Chorlton in South Manchester, Droylsden in East Manchester and MediaCityUK in Salford. Advance work, surveys and investigations on the South Manchester line and at the new Trafford Depot began later in the summer.
The main construction work began in 2009. This included installing permanent drainage along the length of the disused railway cutting that will form the basis of the new line. We have also widened the cutting and installed retaining walls. Work on the new stops began in late 2009. In 2010 the construction programme includes laying new track and installing overhead lines and equipment.
By the end of 2009 the new depot at Trafford had begun to take shape. We have erected the depot buildings, laid the tracks and put in place connections to the existing network. Once complete, it will provide a second depot facility on the south side of the network, housing many of the trams used daily on the Metrolink network.
All construction work will be completed in accordance with GMPTE’s Code of Construction Practice (CoCP). This includes measures to ensure that safety procedures are followed and to minimise disruption to local residents and businesses.
Throughout the construction of the new Metrolink line, please be aware that construction sites can be dangerous places – sites are fenced in for the protection of the public. For your own safety, please do not try to access the worksites along the route of the new line.
Note: the above table refers to work on the South Manchester line as far as St Werburgh’s Road and not the additional extension to Didsbury.
