Construction started on the South Manchester extension from Trafford Bar to St Werburgh’s Road in 2008 and the new line opened in July 2011. Three new stops have been built at Firswood, Chorlton and St Werburgh’s Road and a new depot facility at Trafford Bar has also been constructed to maintain and store our new trams.
In May 2009, a special fund of £1.5 billion was agreed for 15 transport schemes in Greater Manchester. These include a further extension to the South Manchester line from St Werburgh’s Road to East Didsbury. Plans for the extension from St Werburgh’s Road to Didsbury were fully approved by the Department for Transport in March 2010 whereupon MPact-Thales was appointed as the main contractor.
From St Werburgh’s Road, the line will continue to run along the disused railway cutting to East Didsbury serving the local residents and businesses along the route.
Five additional stops will be located at Withington, Burton Road, West Didsbury, Didsbury Village and East Didsbury.
The line will provide improved transport links into city centre. It aims to ease congestion and improve journey times from both Chorlton and Didsbury to the City Centre.
Trams will run every six minutes to Manchester and East Didsbury at peak times and every 12 minutes off peak with a 15 minute service on Sundays and Bank Holidays.
